Jeju launched a voting campaign to be one of seven new “natural wonders” of the world.
About 200 journalists including domestic and foreign reporters, politicians, business leaders and campaigners attended the promotional campaign ceremony on Jan. 13 at the Haevichi Resort Hotel, Pyoseon-ri in Seogwipo City.

Jeju Island is one of the 28 final candidates worldwide for the New7Wonders of Nature led by the Swiss-based, non-profit New7Wonders Foundation. The New7Wonders of Nature initiative started in 2007.

Jeju is the largest island of Korea and the only East Asian location to become a finalist. In addition, the island is the world’s first and only place to be awarded the triple crown as a UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve in 2002, a World Natural Heritage in 2007, and a Global Geopark in 2010.

Participants in the ceremony included Chung Un Chan, former prime minister and chairman of the Korea National Committee for the New7 Wonders of Nature; Woo Keun Min, the Jeju Governor; Boo Man Geun, the chairman of the Jeju Provincial Committee for the New7Wonders of Nature; and many other dignitaries.

In his opening speech, chairman Chung said “On this launching day, I would like to emphasize that we are all global citizens and should be in the forefront of preserving the natural environment of Earth. I would like to encourage all people around the world to join in the voting for the New7Wonders of Nature.”

He added “Out of the 28 finalists, Jeju is the only candidate where people, nature and prehistoric heritage harmoniously coexist at a single location.”

In a congratulatory speech, Governor Woo said “If Jeju is picked as one of the New7Wonders, the island will play a leading role as the environmental capital of the world.”

The candidates can be voted for by phone at 001-1588-7715 or on the Internet at www.jejuN7W.com or at www.new7wonders.com until Nov. 10. The final list will be made public on Nov. 11.
The foundation expects that an estimated 1 billion people around the globe will vote.
