Intangible Cultural Heritage 13, Jeju Keun Gut (Grand Ritual) was held at Jeju Mokgwanaji in Jeju’s old town on Oct 17.

The event at Jeju City’s most historic buildings gave both tourists and Jeju residents a chance to see firsthand the traditional-style ritual. The audience also had the chance to ask for personal blessings and try traditional "gut" foods.

The event included an introduction to the Jeju Keun Gut Preservation Society including the president Suh Sun Sil.

Mun Mu-byeong, director of Jeju Traditional Culture Institute, delivered a short lecture on Jeju’s shamanic heritage.

Also the head shaman for the event, Suh Sun Sil performed ritualistic chanting and prayers in an event intended to increase understanding of Jeju traditions.

The Keun Gut includes all of the elements of the traditional shamanic ritual. Although traditionally up to 14 days in length, nowadays it is more common to see four to five shamans conduct the rite over four to five days.
