Kim Han-wook, chairman of Jeju Free International City Development Center (JDC), spoke about the JDC’s projects and Jeju development in an interview with JDC Junior Journalists. Kim stated he wants to help Jeju people become a success, and make Jeju known to the world.

Kim discussed how Korea is located near the Pacific Ocean and is positioned very well for trade with other countries. Although he said the economic crisis was “a big hardship.”

When asked about the meaning of “free international city” he said it is the basis for the free movement of people which can help develop both Jeju and Korea. It was clear he had great hope for the plan, particularly as Jeju doesn’t have much manufacturing and its nature is crucial for the people’s prosperity. Kim made it clear that it is an important quest for Jeju people to preserve the enviorment and leave it for future generations.

In answer to the second question on Kim’s favorite JDC projects, Kim said it was the construction of the medical park and Jeju Global Education City. Although he added, “Developing Jeju is important but we have to preserve Jeju’s environment.” His answer struck a chord with the assembled junior journalists, some of whom were also interested in medical treatment, as it suggested he wanted value for the people.

Thirdly, he talked about supporting 200 million won and he will manage an English camp this summer, adding he will “endeavor to foster Jeju’s talented people,” which he ranks himself among.

Lastly, the junior journalists were pleased to hear Kim plans to develop future video projects, which suggests he wants to improve education and even lead a Jeju journalism program.
