It is a place that makes people comfortable. A place where people can feel Jeju’s sense of community. It is the Jeju City Traditional 5-day Market, which opens every five days and has been 1)running for over 100 years.

There are many markets across the island, but A)the 5-day market beats them all in size and items sold. There are unique sections such as the “grandmother” market area and the area 2)renowned for its “galot,” or Jeju traditional 3)persimmon-dryed clothing.

Many people are attracted to the market in July due to the hot weather. Not only are people 4)out and about, but the market B)provides shade from the heat.

Choi Heekyung, a 34-year-old woman, said, “I came today because I want to buy my son a dog, but I usually come here when I’m free. I think the 5-day market is good because there are cheap products and C)a sense of community.D)The best thing I can show to my children is Jeju’s sense of community and tradition.”

Hong Yeongsoon, a 58-year-old woman, said, “I’ve run this 5)booth for over 30 years. The 5-day market has many different products. It’s cheap and customers can 6)haggle, so they can get things at a lower price. The 5-day market is also good because we have many 7)hard-to-find things not always in the city.”

Jang Soonnyeo has been working at the market for over 20 years, and she said, “It’s easier to sell 8)products at the 5-day market than other places, because we can sell things directly from our farm. Customers can get products more easily and cheaply.”

The Jeju City Traditional 5-day Market certainly has a sense of community and tradition. It is easy to see why many people believe this market is so important to Jeju.
