This is the first of a series of Mongni cartoons to be published in The Weekly courtesy of “Artpq.” They previously appeared in our Chinese sister edition, Jejujugan. For more of Mongni visit here.

The Jeju black pig, or “heukdwaeji,” is a small local pig breed with black skin and smooth hair. In the past, Jeju black pigs lived near outdoor latrines called “tongsi” and fed on human feces. This was an effective way to recycle resources and feces also contain plenty of useful live bacteria.

Jeju black pigs were usually bred for food and people enjoyed boiled pork or made blood sausages known as “sundae.” Nowadays, Jeju pork is well known for its taste and is one of the most popular foods for locals and tourists alike.

Tip: The best way to tell if you are eating black pig is to look for black hair in the follicles of the skin.
